Begging the question?
I think your base assumption you take as a given, needs to be questioned.
If I have good players with limited IP or PA that I'm alternating with poorer players, I'll play the best team on the road and leave the poorer players on the farm. I try not to put INN pitchers on the away roster but use them as needed at home.
When I have a team like that, my road record is usually better than my home record; but it is because I "am" being active.
Also, I think you "assume" a manager is going to manage better than the robot. Considering that the robot was programmed with some information the rest of us don't have, for instance:
Watch the robot move the infield in and out, does it have a better idea of when to do that than you do? I'd guess so. I assume you give up some hits by playing in, or playing close to the corner, but I have no idea what percent the game decides is a reasonable amount of extra hits vs outs at the plate or fewer extra base hits down the line. What circumstances make the hit and run a higher percentage play the way the game is programmed.
We don't know all that [thank goodness] but the robot does (I assume - now I'm the one with the unproven assumption - G). We all like to think we out manage the robot but when you total all teams home-away record, the stats don't look that impressive. [I think there is a post down the list of the forum where someone reported on this.]
The robot sometimes makes dumb moves (as do I) and is much maligned (surely I'm not...), but I'm not convinced it is a worse manager than my human opponent [though I am certain that I'm better than it - G].
