Inactive managers

Posted By Matt R.

I came into PB in 1998 because I saw an ad in Baseball Weekly for the website. I played a Launch League, and then me and a friend bought teams in PB 98 RT-2, and I bought a team in 98 TRAD-2. Later, I bought a team in 99 RT-2, and took over teams in K17 and 99 RT-4. I have paid my fees on time for seven years now. Wouldn't it be a good idea to find even as few as three managers like me to take over, say, fifteen of the unmanaged teams and generate a hundred bucks a month? The only way to do this is to do two things: 1) advertise, and 2) have launch leagues available.

Would it be possible for Mike to cede control of the ability to run a launch league to one of the veteran managers (not me, I'd run it worse than Mike does)? Could we vets pool together a nickel or two to place an ad somewhere like Baseball Weekly, or with a listserv like the one Lee Sinis runs?

I sent a request to USA Today to see how much an ad costs, I will reply to this post if and when I receive a reply. However, the key to the success of such an endeavor would be well-run and freely-available launch leagues for newbies. Wouldn't it be great to fill the leagues with new blood? Or, maybe start a league for the first time in five years?

I agree with a poster below, PB is unmatched. I know there are more people out there that would agree, and if we could grow this some, maybe more resources could be dedicated to running it.

I worked for Stats, Inc. on a part-time basis when I was in undergrad helping run their classic leagues, so I know there are people out there willing to put in part-time hours to do this type of work. If we could cause PB revenues to go up by a few hundred dollars per month, Mike could justify hiring a college student at $8/hour, 5 hrs/wk ($160/month) to answer emails, run league games, etc. But I can understand that the revenue stream would need to be increased by more than $160/month to make that happen. Several owners have said that they would be willing to pay more to make this better. The money can be put toward advertising, if Mike will allow someone, or several someones, to run the Launch Leagues for new owners only, with current owners acting as fill-ins on a waiting list to make the leagues fill up quickly.

Just my thoughts on this issue, I am no businessman. What are the community's thoughts on this plan?
