I think the answer varies among different managers and situations. If I was competing for a title, I'd be inclined to go for the veteran slugger; if I was rebuilding, I'd probably go for the lottery pick since guys like Griffey and Edmonds may be retired by the time I'm ready to compete.
As to the original trade offer listed on the board, same thing applies. I could see someone in contention and needing a couple of starters who could contribute immediately taking that trade. On a rebuilding team, maybe not. I'm assuming that if you had a lottery pick, you may be in a rebuilding mode (but perhaps not), and if so, you may not take that trade. But I don't think it is "rediculous" and don't see any need to embarrass the proposing manager in a public forum.
