UNM Teams & Trades
I would like to float two suggestions at the same time. While traditional leagues were stuck in limbo for about six weeks there was a lot of board discusiion as to what was wrong with PB and how could it be fixed. I think the most immediate problem is that Mike & John do not have the time to do all that it takes for PB to run smoothly. This is compounded by the large number of unmanaged teams. Previously on this board I suggested having league "assistant commissioners". These would be veteran managers (perhaps a minimum of three years of continious team ownseship?) who would be responsible for looking after all the unmanaged teams in a given league. The league of course would have to be a league in which the assistant commish does not own a team. Duties of the assistant commish would include making sure rosters were kept current (ie no worn out or overused players). Perhaps the UNM trade proposals could be decided by the assistant commish as well. Mike has indicated that he does not think a committee can handle that responsibility in an efficient manner. Why not a veteran manager who has no vested interest in that league? Mike knows baseball but I don't think his judgment is necessarily any better than many of the veteran PB managers. I think one problem with the current structure is that Mike does not have time to study the entire roster and make a judgment as to what a particular team needs. My guess is that he glances at the roster for a few minutes at best and makes a judgment. Given that there are about 100 unmanaged teams how could anyone possibly be familiar with each teams needs? Now on the other hand if an assistant commish had to be responsible for only three or four teams and had been keeping watch on their lineups/rosters all season long he would be in a much better position to make a judgment as to that teams specific needs. Mike you keep saying that this is a hobby and not a business. Why not allow some of you fellows some more responsibility? Many of us are willing to help.
