Hysteria!!!

Posted By Dave N

I agree with the tone of this post. Baseball needed to act sooner to clean up its act, but the present high-pitched babble is just the latest manifestation of our nation's Puritan strain. We want heroes, we set them up on a pedestal, and then we find ways to bring them down--in effect, we stone them, like in ancient times.
I think the current book, which I haven't yet read but will, is a lurid attempt to cash in on this kind of hero-worship, hero-killing attitude.
Further, I believe false positives are a much greater threat in testing than we are told.
Periodically we have scandals in this country where crime labs are shown to have provided faulty results, sending people to prison. Who knows that isn't happening in the drug testing field as well?
The science of testing is imperfect and seems always to be chasing new drugs. The labs are even less perfect, so I take the results with some considerable skepticism.
Just as some politicians are now trying to rehabilitate Sen. Joseph McCarthy's tactics, our present paranoid age loves to tear down careers without cause.
