But did they go high in the monthly FA draft?

Posted By DaveF

Unfortunately the monthly FA drafts just got removed - PB management is on the ball - but now I can't check draft positions for the guys on Ken's list.

One of the nice things about the monthly FA draft is that you can often get some future stars even if you have a top team with low draft positon. If you draft 24th(best record), you get the 24th and 25th picks vs the 1st and 48th picks for the worst team in the league.

I'm guessing some of those players on Ken's list went to teams drafting in the bottom half of the draft. If you do research (and get lucky), you can gamble on some young prospects even if their current stats aren't so super. A lousy franchise may get the Francoer's of the world who come out with great stats the current year. But someone who is a youngster with great promise but mediocre current stats thogh enough games to qualify for the monthly draft - is probably going to be available for you at that 24th & 25th pick - if you are lucky enough to find them.

I have to wonder where Chris Shelton was taken in the montly FA drafts for example. In 98RT1 he apparently went to a team winning 109 games (not Ken's...or mine...I'm sure I must have drafted later though...I know I did get Fernando Rodney in round 2 of a monthly draft)

My point is that the monthly FA drafts aren't that big an advantage to the worst teams, they are a way for ALL teams to find future stars. The worst teams get first pick at the 2-3 guys with great current stats, but often a guy with lousy rookie stats is a great prospect. I'll take Koufax & Gibson but they weren't that great their rookie seasons 1.46 & 1.53 whips with plenty of walks. Those guys might have easily fallen to the lower 1st round or later. The monthly FA draft rewards you for your research and your luck more as much as it rewards the lousy teams. In addition the rookie star you grabbed (King Felix?) is now not in the rookie draft so your high rookie draft pick isn't worth as much.
