Owner Motivation

Posted By concerned about PB

I agree with earlier comments that Purebaseball has a fundamental flaw: No incentive for non-playoff teams to try to win. I'm watching critical games in my realtime league take place with one team having a farm team loaded with good players while overused players litter the active roster. This even AFTER the roster expansion point. Unlike those previous posts on the subject I will make some suggestions, although I admit they still don't go far enough in encouraging owners to keep trying 100%. Maybe other people can come up with other ideas to improve things additionally. I think the key draft positions for FA and Rookie drafts (the major drafts in the spring in RT leagues) should not be handed out according to the worst records. In my fantasy football leagues the top draft picks are given to the teams which come closest to making the playoffs without making it. To make this rule work best with the PB system I would suggest that small groupings of non-playoff teams are constructed. But instead of the bottom few teams record-wise having a lottery for the top pick, it should be the group nearest to making the playoffs while falling short which should be entered into the lottery for the top picks. In a 24 team league, for instance, 8 teams make the playoffs. The next 8 teams should be in the lottery for the top 8 picks. Then the worst 8 teams should be in a lottery for the next 8 and finally the playoff teams should get the last 8. At least owners would feel they have to work their hardest to try to get in that middle 8 team pack. I would also suggest that the in-season FA drafts in Realtime leagues should be totally random through at least the mid-point of the season. Too much can change in a realtime league to start giving artificial help to teams which don't necessarily need it and who is to say that doing a crummy job in the initial draft should automatically qualify you for a helping hand anyway? That's welfare for the inept and lazy. Later in the season some help to also rans is probably
appropriate.
Those are my two cents.
