How is it any different than a team trading young guys with a future or draft picks for a star? Doesn't that affect the playoffs in the same way?

Any team that chooses to build a winning team either way (by trading for a star or by trading for a bunch of guys who together equal a star)does so at a price (a future price, usually). I see no difference between the two methods and they BOTH affect the outcome of the playoffs.
