Eliminating Lefties is Bad Strategy.
Any advice to eliminate ALL lefties is misguided and will cost you dearly. Those vets must have been kidding you (it's happened before)or they simply don't understand how PB works.
There are two reasons:
1. Not having a leftie starter and one in the 'pen gives a huge advantage to your opponent who, when setting up his lineup, doesn't have to include any hitters to face lefties. This means he can either stack additional pitchers or additional pinch hitters or pinch runners. A case in point is Klesko, my favorite 1B. He stinks agains lefties, so I always have to include another 1B for the game or PH situation when a leftie is on the mound. When I see a lineup with all righties I start salivating 'cos I know I can I can be very aggressive with PH and 'pen moves.
2. The key stat to look at is the leftie pitcher's average against lefties. If it's very low (.210 or less is my guideline), I'll use him when I want to get out a leftie hitter or turn a switch hitter around. Trust me, it works, since the game is driven by the hitters' and pitchers' respective averages.
Of course, you don't want too many lefties since the majority of hitters are righties and they tend to hit lefties better.
