Maybe it shows "in progress" as soon as the home manager clicks the hotlink for the game to be played. While he's setting he's selecting his starter, setting lineups, etc....it is showing "in progress". Sometimes if I get interupted while doing that, I'll just close my browser and come back to it at another time. I'm guessing that when the home manager does that, it goes back to the pending status. Just a guess, but it would seem to make sense.

Next time I have a home series, I might check my schedule page in Netscape (not logged in to PB) while setting my lineups in Internet Explorer...if it shows "in progress" while I'm just doing lineups, then your question would be answered.
