Vazquez' BFA

Posted By Eric

With 4 days of rest Vazquez, who has a recovery rate of 8/day, would gain 32 BFA in the week since his last start. Since 30 is all he needed to be rested enough to start, his BFA after his last start had to be at least -2. Any lower and he would not have rested enough to be chosen by the computer.

If he pitched 8.3 innings he had to have had a minimum of 25 batters in that game. Vazquez averages about 1.44 baserunners. In 8.3 innings an average Vazquez performance would yield 12 baserunners. Since Vazquez induces doubleplays only once per 16 games I will not take them into consideration. This means that if Vazquez pitched an average game his BF for the game would be 25+12 = 37.

Vazquez' max BFA is only 32 which would mean he was at -5 after his last start and would require a 5th day of rest instead of the 4 he was given.

Now, I've made some assumptions because I don't have all the facts concerning his last start but this calculation shows that it is entirely possible Vazquez was not rested on his starting day. Since the alternative is that a fairly dependable computer program made a fluke error, I'm inclined to believe the much more possible BFA shortage. You can check Vazquez' last start and replace my calculated BF of 37 for his actual performance. If it is higher than 34 than you have found your problem.

As to why Lowe pitched so long, when a reliever is started he is given extra BFA. I don't recall exactly how many and I can't find the number in a quick look at the manual but I believe it is in the low 30's. Once Lowe got hammered, an example of a reliever who hadn't started in real life being degraded in PB, the computer probably figured the game was a lost cause and left him in to eat useless innings. Since a pitcher won't be flagged as tired until after he gives up a baserunner after he reaches his BFA he probably hit an unfortunate hot streak in his low 30 BFs and was left in even longer.

Hope this helps some. I've been burned with a reliever starting against my wishes too this year and that case ended up me miscounting my BFAs when determining my rotation for the week. I'm guessing the same happened to you.
