Good idea -- bad example

Posted By Tim A.

Rob,

I like the idea of comparing a player accross several leagues. But this Jeff Conine experiment really is not a good example. You are comparing some leagues where he has 280 or more at bats to other leagues where he has less than 100 (or in some cases less than 50) at bats. That hardly makes for a good comparison -- the ones with very few at bats could be skewed quite a bit based on when those at bats occurred.

However, I do like the idea of your excercise and it would be interesting when comparing players that have 500 PA in every league. Although you would still have to deal with the difference in home ballparks.

Additionally I propose that in future studies you list PA (instead of or in additon to AB) and OBP. I am one of those new maverick owners that don't care what an AVG looks like if the SLG and OBP are good. Give me a .240 hitter with a .390 OBP any day and I'll be happy to stick him in the 1, 2, 8, or 9 slot.
