The Yankee dynasty
I just read all the articles on the "Analyst" page. There's a whole lot of praise for the champions, and deservedly so I suppose. They did win it all with a quality team. But before all New York fans start getting teary eyed over thinking about being part of a dynasty, they really have to take things in context. The Yankees buy championships. They have the market and an owner with deep pockets which allows them to keep developed talent, and then fill holes with the best available free agent. A lot of teams would love to sign guys like Neagle and Justice at the deadline, but only the Yankees can afford it. It's not going stop either. Is it really a dynasty when you just go out and buy the best players? What happens if the Yankees win 8 in 10? Maybe then the league will do something about shortening the gap between rich and poor teams. Win on a even playing field and then you can start talking dynasties.
With all due respect to the commish, I just can't pick Frank Thomas as the AL MVP. Sure, a full time DH should qualify for the MVP, but he better have dominating stats if you're going to give it to him. He doesn't have dominating stats. Carlos Delgado had a phenominal season and beats Frank in most offensive categories. Delgado dominated at the plate AND plays good defence every inning, not just taking his 4 AB every game.
The biggest argument against Delgado is that his team didn't make the playoffs. What does that have to do with individual accomplishments? So it's Delgado's fault that Chicago has a better pitching staff than Toronto? Ridiculous. Carlos deserves the AL MVP. He has the best stats, plays good defence, and is one of the best leaders in the game. Any other choice would be a travesty.
