Okay... but then how...

Posted By RobG

do you rate and judge a player?

I draft a pitcher with a 3.50 era and he ends up with a 7 era. I trade for a batter who hit .300, and he hits .245. Meanwhile, a .240 hitter bats close to .300. What am I to believe? How can I believe any numbers I see?

Yes, I understand that the smaller leagues and the misuse of many players will have an effect on the stats... I haven't played sim ball for 10+ years to miss that... but there are steps that can be taken to rectify those problems. (my league on 8 teams and a 50 game season that played for 7 or so years NEVER suffered such statistical variations...)

But you know what... I'm really tired of this discussion, and tired of banging my head on the wall. This discussion has been re-visted time and time again and I see that this too will be just like the "small sample size" arguements.

Interesting to note that in your post you chose a very unpopular example. I'll warn you now, almost everyone here sees pitching as being the part of baseball that SHOULD SUFFER because of "more offensive" batters in the league. After all, there are better hitters and better platoons available. No one seems to understand the arguments that you bring up (tighter bullpens, better four man rotations etc...). I know... because I've pushed that point as well till I was blue in the face. The two should balance each other out.. IN the long run. But I've long given up on that angle as well. So save yourself some stress and obey the thought police that are the other members in this forum.

Above all else... these facts remain:

1) I love PB
2) Even with a 41-119 season, I love PB
3) I know Mike & the guys at PB are constantly working with the program, and tweaking it, so despite what is said here... I can always secretly hope that they will tame the algorythms :)

And with that... I vow to not speak another word on statistical inaccuracies in the game again. THAT will be my new year's resolution.

(Okay... knock it off... you all can stop cheering now...)

:p
