Injuries

Posted By Tim A.

Injuries to star hitters occur.

However:

(1) The long term ones are much less in magnitude than the ones for pitchers.

(2) It does not take them as long to recover typically.

examples:

Kerry Wood took a year and 2 months to make it back to the majors but it was 2 years before he started being effective. Matt Morris took two years to get back and 2.5 years to be effective.

Moises Alou took about a year and a month to get back but once he was back he was effective right away. Griffey is probably looking at being out 3 months (not a year).

There are too many to enumerate but I believe that if you did a detailed study you would find a very high percentage of good starters (my guess is 50-75% or more) that get injured or stink for years at a time ... compared to what you get for the good hitters.
