The Five Starting Pitchers that are worth a top slugger...
........ are Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux, Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson, and Mike Mussina. Noone else dominates year in year out.
A lot of guys have a good year here and there but none of the rest are reliable every single year.
So if I have a choice between Chan Ho Park and Manny Ramirez I'm gonna take Ramirez because he is more reliable year in year out.
Look at Rick Helling .... good year, bad year, good year, bad year ......... I think I'll take a guy like Geoff Jenkins or something like that.
Kevin Millwood...... one great year followed by a couple mediocre's.
Brad Radke for all the hype does not really have ace like numbers year in year out.
My point is that you need *SOLID* guys when you are trying to win. But if you drop all your eggs in the pitching basket you will be disappointed unless your eggs are named Kevin, Pedro, Greg, Randy, and Mike. Now if you can get that staff then I'll concede that good pitching makes sense.
