Ichiro vs. Dunn and Beckett

Posted By Danb

I think there's a perception that Ichiro, while very good, also has some holes in his game and is not truly a "superstar". Corner OF who doesn't hit for power, doesn't walk, doesn't hit lefties very well.

Dunn performed very well at an early age and gave indications that he's a dominant power hitter in the making. Beckett is the most-hyped pitcher in a very long time, and his sip of coffee last year didn't disturb the image any.

Owners are reluctant to pass on a perceived mega-star, even if they have to wait a year - they just might not get that chance again. Whether this is truly the watershed rookie draft it's cracked up to be only time will tell, but I think that anticipation contributed to the rising stock of Dunn and Beckett.

Fortunately, I didn't have to make that call. Ichiro slid to me at #5 in K17 (and I needed an OF big-time); In 2000 Trad 1, Suzuki went 2 and I (needing 1 more arm to round out the rotation) grabbed Oswalt 3rd.
