Also not to make the discussion too political, Steve's comment reflects an attitude that infects both politics and the game.
The elite among our teams can't survive without the competition of the bottom feeders. In order for the leagues to be successful, the bottom feeders have to have a genuine opportunity to rebuild.
The successful may delude themselves that they don't need anyone else--in society and in the game.
In society, let them try to keep their millions without the government assuring stability and keeping the poorest of the poor at subsistence level. Most of those in scoiety who've been successful have done so as a result of the rest of us, through the government, paying for all kinds of things that lets them succeed so we can enjoy the fruits of their labor (for a price).
In the game, let the elite teams try to have a meaningful game in a league where half the teams are unmanaged because the bottom feeders have given up in disgust.
If you Free Enterprise purists don't at least give those at the bottom the illusion that they, too, can succeed, they will soon take all you have and it won't matter because nobody will be able to subsidize your lifestyle by buying the products of the companies you own stock in!
It's a small and rather leaky boat, and we're all in it together--despite the George W. Bushes of the world who are born on third base and think they hit a home run. (credit to Ann Richards).
