Right, the game as it is shipped, uses fictional players and teams.

However, with a quick download from here:

You can patch the game to use MLB players, photos, team logos, stadiums, etc etc

Also, by using the "baseball archive" update:

http://www.baseball1.com/statistics/

You can replicate any season going back to 1871 up to the present time. With APBA, you have to pay for those season disks. With this download, it's free.

Without all of this third party support, I probably would have looked past it as well (gotta have real ball players to keep me interested).
