Most players will go for money rather than a merit badge - and that is the problem - some owners will pay anything to win.
The problem is that eventually you end up with massive imbalance and a league that no longer functions properly. Who wants to pay for a 162 game season when everyone knows that the Yankees are going to win again and again and again? As teams die off and ratings fall, who will care about baseball except for the Yankee fan? It will kill the sport.
And if you think this kind of "sharing" doesn't work - just look at the NFL - complete TV revenue sharing, and incredible balance in the league.
I don't think ANYONE here would say that MLB is in a stronger position than the NFL. The NFL is king.
