Re: The idea of throwing contracted players in spring FA draft
I think I've seen this suggestion before and I'd like to weigh in.
People have had FA picks and traded them for months based on the inherent assumptions of what the typical level of talent in the FA draft is. This includes both contenders who offered up their FA #1's for help this year and possibly rebuilders who packaged their FA #1 for some young player they think will produce. To suddenly inject an additional 15 star players + 40 useful regulars/starters into that pool would be changing the rules substantially in the middle of the game.
Its going to be one thing when everyone makes their cuts and there are an extra 108 players (part timers or role players or veterans with down years or fringe prospects) in the FA draft that weren't there otherwise. Those 108 players are going to change the value of FA picks in these leagues. But to add 15 IMPACT players and 40 other regulars to the FA pool and then distribute them to the entire league based on a random order....... tough pill to swallow.
Or to state it another way....... Imagine you traded away your FA#1 pick in a trade thinking you were giving up the equivalent of Jason Johnson (or another middle of the road starter) or Buddy Groom (or another reliever that kicked butt in 2002) ....... then you suddenly find out that after they changed the rules the player you really gave up when you made that trade was Greg Maddux or Jeff Bagwell.
I think I made my point....... There are a lot of decent answers that we can haggle over.... some of the options are better than others..... but no matter what other decisions are made throwing everyone from contracted teams into the spring FA draft is not the right way to go
