Salary Cap / RT or TRAD?

Posted By Erle

I agree with Tim A. that a PB cap is a bad idea because of the wildly inconsistent numbers that get assigned, especially for pitchers.

My rotation is another good example of the inconsistency:

Schilling 3.654 3.23 ERA 259.1 IP 316 K
Mussina 3.623 4.05 ERA 215.2 IP 182 K
Lawrence 1.654 3.69 ERA 210 IP 149 K
Sturtze 2.288 5.18 ERA 224 IP 137 K

I can't imagine anyone considering Tanyon Sturtze more valuable than Brian Lawrence, and Schilling was better than Mussina in every way this year, yet their PB values are nearly identical. Lawrence was arguably better than Mussina, yet his PB value is half of Mussina's.

And I'm not clear whether the salary cap is being considered for RT leagues as well as TRAD. The FA draft in RT leagues is run a month or so into the season. That early in the year, PB values in RT leagues can be seriously out of whack. A part-time scrub who's gotten a lot of at-bats and performed well in them can have a higher PB value than an All-Star regular player who's off to a slow start.

I can't see how a PB cap could work effectively in RT leagues. Forcing all teams to cut down to 27 players before the FA draft is already cap enough as far as I'm concerned. I always find myself having to cut a good prospect, valuable role-player or aging veteran to get down to 27.

If it's decided something must be done to promote competitive balance, forcing teams to cut down to 26 or 25 seems like a better option.
