First last happens all the time in the majors. Aging teams make a last run for it, then rebuild in two to three years.

I have done this in a couple leagues. I traded all players above 30, went from a PB of 85 down to 45, and go from 95 wins to 445 wins. Was I tanking, no. I see I can't win it all, trade players that can't help my future, and go from there.
