Hey Brian
Ted Williams is my all time favourite baseball player :) What is happening with his children fighting over what he left behind as well as his body has really angered me. It's a shame really.
As for Bonds, I;m not sure what to say. You must live close to the Bay area so you'll be more exposed to the things he might do in the community - the only way I get to see Bonds is through the television and print media. So the only things I see of him are him being surly and prima donna like. I place Barry in the same class as another Giant who did play for my Jays and who was also a media idiot, Benito Santiago. This guy was just plain rude, insulting Toronto and their fans every time he could. He hated it in Toronto - only came here for the year because we would pay him more. But that's another story.
As a player, I respect Bonds. Is he among the greatest? Sure, I'd buy that. Would I like him on the Jays? Definitely. He'd love the Dome. But as a person I don't think he handles himself well.
When someone become a baseball player they take on a lot of salary. A team doesn't just pay players to perform, they pay them to be an ambassador for the team. A-Rod didn't just get his contract for his numbers, Texas wanted to also make him a focal point for their team. They are trying to sell tickets through him. The same can be said for Bonds. For that reason I think Bonds has a responsibility to answer any question given to him no matter if he feels it is stupid or not. Because of his numbers, because of his status children will look up to him. He should be a good example (Like Jim Thome for example).
Everyone who works with the public must be the same. When I worked as first line support for Networks for my company a few years ago I received the stupidest calls you could imagine, like blaming the network for a printer printing in the wrong font, but I had to remain curteous and work with that person on the phone for 15 minutes trying to explain that the network cabling and routing doesn't care about the font of his print job. I could've said "That's stupid" but I also faced losing my job. Maybe that is the difference - Bonds knows he won't lose his job.
I did see a lot of interviews with other Giants who were all cordial. It's not about being trite really, it about being a star player. This is the only thing I see missing from Bonds as a player.
As for me being happy about the loss, yes, I was. But I was more happy for Anaheim and guys like Troy Percival who have stuck it out with a cruddy team when he could have gone elsewhere. I wasn't so much commenting on the fact Bonds lost the series, but in the fact that his surlyness had returned (until the loss he had actually been very good to the media this championships).
Ah well... I'm sure the Giants will have another shot at it next year, as long as they keep the core together (isn't Kent a free agent this year?)
