An "unknown" injury or a likelihood of their being one is the only logical explanation for this. At this stage of his career, Maddux is a five-inning pitcher. They were better off with Millwood. Their taking on Ortiz and Byrd makes me wonder if they've lost their touch.
Time will tell.
