Sorry about your head

More simple:

My conclusions are that:

* PB punishes Torri Hunter for not catching balls hit up the left-field line.

* PB punishes Aaron Boone for not getting to balls hit to the first-baseman.

Zone Rating is the % of balls a guy gets to within the expected area of his position.

I think the Zone Rating is the better statistic to measure how an individual fielder affects the probability of hitting. It is a stat designed to be a catch-all-be-all measurement of a player's range.

The examples in my previous (head-hurting) post illustrate the effect. The total range of the Twins outfield is accurate in PB but is credited too much to the Left and Right Fielders at the expense of the Center Fielders.

This started with Hunter owners complaining that his PB range could not be correct. The world says he's great but PB says he's terrible. Mike explained that PB uses real stats rather than judgemental reputations. I set-out to understand PB range and support the calculations. However, believe that I instead proved a mistaken assumption in PB that leads to Hunters poor range when it really should be as good as his reputation.
