Non-SS's Out Of Position
Similar to the discussion of non-catchers not being penalized enough, I’ve noticed something in my RT league involving Troy Glaus that seems out of whack.
Glaus played all of two innings over two games at shortstop this year, and was given an ODR of 1 by the game in RT leagues. In 2000RT1, the Bosque County Chapparals have been using Glaus as their everyday shortstop and he’s played extremely well.
In 130 simulated games at short, he had a fielding percentage of .987, which is far better than the .950 he should have posted at third. His RANGE as accumulated by the game was 4.580, so he got to a lot of balls. And what’s more, he turned an astonishing 123 double plays! Those are Gold Glove numbers from a guy who’s playing out of position. Combine that with his .800 OPS and you’ve got an all-star candidate on a team without an actual shortstop.
I don’t blame Bosque County’s manager for using Glaus so heavily – I’d do the same if it was working – but it does seem like a glitch that should be addressed in the off-season.
Has anyone else ever noticed an abberation like this at positions other than catcher?
