Platooning

Posted By DaveF

It seems to me that the overuse of platoon players is one of the flaws of the game.

What your cap might be doing is rewarding guys who draft platoon players with low PA's but very high ROPS or LOPS and then platoon them (and often overuse them).

It would also encourage you to use a lot of relief pitchers instead of starters because relievers tend to have lower PB value - so you get some moderate starters with great relievers and only pitch the starters 4 innings.

The platoon problem is a bigger issue though. If you look at low PB value teams that do well, they are often very high platoon users.

Platooning makes the game unrealistic because of the small sample size of the players with fewer PA's. A-Rod may hit .460 for 100 PA'S but not for a season for example. The same happens with platoon guys, especially when you just look at how they did vs LHP or vs RHP. Say a guy has 300 PA'S with 120 vs LHP but he has a .420 BA and .720 slugging pct vs lefties. Now he gets 300 PA'S all used vs lefties. That just isn't reality.

Just my 2 cents worth.
