Not small sample size

First I'm not suggeting that ALL players be limited on their defensive usage, only those with very low IP at a position...and even then they only revert to whatever would be their performance if they had NO appearances. A 2B used at 1B would still perform adequately if he had good 2B stats.

As for Glaus, here are some stats from 98RT1:

Shortstop G Inn PO A E DP FPCT Range
Troy Glaus 102 821.3 115 257 3 58 .992 4.076
Alex Gonzalez 89 602.0 77 192 15 28 .947 4.022

I realize these won't format correctly, but let me first say that the Alex Gonzalez is the "good Alex" who had PB value at ss of:

ODR = 7.1
Range = 9
FPCT = 2
DP = 8.5

Now, based on the ACTUAL PERFORMANCE IN PB LAST SEASON, would you prefer Glaus or Gonzalez?

For what it is worth, Glaus outperformed Gonzalez for me in each of the last 2 years with similar PB rating of 1. The KEY I believe is that he DID make at least 1 putout and made ZERO errors. In fact his actual stats for last year were:
2 IP
1 PO
1 A
0 errors
1 DP

I personally do NOT believe Glaus is a unique situation.

You can argue that Todd Zeile should have better stats at catcher than Carl Everett because Zeile started his career as a catcher, but trying to put stuff like that in a game is nearly impossible. If that were tried though, I would not object. BUT...to take VERY limited defensive stats and allow a player to be used an unlimited amount at that position without penalizing him (and maybe even rewarding him) for poor defense, is just not a good SIM.

My view.

I think it would not be a difficult change, but the game needs to enforce the change by penalizing players with limited stats...just like it does for hitters with limited stats. If you have a hitter with only 7 at bats but who hit 3 HR in those 7 at bats, he will be given ZERO plate appearances with his actual stats and gets innocuous pitcher-type stats. The same should be true with defense.
