You can't play everybody everywhere with no penalty ...
There have to be limitations on defense and penalties for playing guys out of position.
Your argument would be just as true for Marrero if he had played ZERO games at catcher last season. If Nevin ONLY plays 1B this year, does that mean he couldn't have played 3B?
But somehow if the game is to simulate player performances and if defense is going to be a part of the game, you have to use stats as to what someone ACTUALLY did.
I personally think that if we took defense out of the SIM and just used players offensive stats, the game would not be nearly as fun and interesting. It might be easier to have players PB numbers match their actual season numbers, but that isn't really what this SIM tries to do...at least I don't think so.
So to not allow Marrero to play catcher if he wasn't used at all but to allow him to play ALL his games at catcher if he got used in 1 game and had one putout, does not make sense to me. It makes a mockery of the whole defensive portion of the game.
Just because an infield of A-Rod, Jeter, Gurerrero, and Tejada might be a great defensive infield if ever tried in "real-life", doesn't mean PB should encourage you to draft all SS and not bother to pay attention to position.
I'm not arguing that we limit most players to the exact innings they played at a position, as you say this is not a replay league. I just want to limit the low use players in order to make the game more than just gamesmanship.
If the game was set up to use a running 5 year history of players defense, fine. But it isn't. So if Biggio never plays at 2B this year we shouldn't expect him to play well at 2b in PB; even though he probably could still do so in the real world.
