Interesting...

I agree with your point. This 10 PA rule only applies to a very limited number of players and I'm suggesting a somewhat bigger area for the limited defense. But not much bigger... I only think this needs to apply to VERY limited defensive use players - though I would certainly put the '99 Sweeney in this category.

I'm thinking more along the lines of how platoon players are limited. If you played only a small percent of your time at a position, you would get your defensive rating at that position for the number of innings you actually played at the position and then have your defense degraded to poor at that position. You would still get your grade for the innings you played (for Sweeney 22 innings) before being degraded.

In addition to situations like Sweeney and Glaus where a player was used as an emergency backup (I assume), this might also apply to players who are essentially DH players but who played a few games or innings at a position. Realistically, those guys are probably poor defensively or they wouldn't be DHing.

It would not affect utility players who played several innings at several positions.

I still think that being able to play Sweeney at C, or Glaus at SS for the ENTIRE PA limit use of the player makes the game less realistic.

Incidentally, in the case of Marrero, who started this chain of posts, he played plenty at C to be used full time at C even under my suggested restrictions.

I enjoyed your logic, but I thought maybe you'd at least acknowledge that I had read the manual and that perhaps you were mistaken on one point anyway. The 10 PA limit is NOT from me but from the manual.

Interesting that you give my example guy 3 walks in 7 at bats...based on your 650 PA sample, that would give him something like 195 walks for the season...not bad. Maybe a stretch to make a point? Still, I agree with the point.
