No Contraction Mr. Selig
20 team leagues further dilute the level of reality in managing a team beacuse you're bound to have less teams with holes. A roster problem becomes "should I replace my good third baseman with a great third baseman?" instead of "damn, the hole I have at thirdbase is killing my team". I've always hated small league fantasy baseball (and fantasy baseball in general vice sim baseball) for its lack of... to be blunt, baseball intelligence. Under the current format, you'd be hard pressed to find a RT team that is stacked both offensively and in pitching; even if theyre stacked offensively, theyll have a hole somewhere in theyre lineup, etc., etc...
My solution: Most leagues have about 4 dead teams. Recruit new mangers - you all must work with plenty of guys who play fantasy baseball, turn them on to sim baseball... Even if they're not the brightest baseball people - bring them in and rip them off! Get that firstbase prospect you've been drooling over on that unmanaged team that auto-drafted him two years ago. If 1/4 of the managers in the league are pro-active and get one person to sign up, then the league will fill up... Contraction is not the way though.
