Rebuilding W/O Contraction
The simple fact is that if you don't do you're homework, you can't rebuild a team; however, consider this RT scenrio: most dead teams (that need rebuilding) should be able to draw two additional first round rookie picks from other league owners. I'd say that there are about 3 monthly FA drafts that contain premium rookie talent - usually one, maybe two studs. If you keep your PB value down and lose badly as expected (or else you wouldnt be rebuilding), you should be able to snatch those guys up. Not including prospects and younger guys you pick up in straight trades, a rebuilding team should be able to pick up at least 6 decent prospects per year, maybe even more... Until you cant stand prospects anymore and you're just waiting for guys to mature, like I am now...
For example, I made a questionable trade my first year: Shawn Green for Placido Polanco, Juan Encarnacion, and a second round rookie pick. First off, I needed quantity... With that second round pick, I got Brandon Larson. But most importantly, by shedding Shawn Greens PB value, I was able to get first crack at the next monthly free agent draft where I got Adam Dunn... the overwhelming second choice, a hot-at-the-time Bud Smith.
