I enjoy building a winner as much as the next guy, but if it's going to take 2-3yrs, and $240-360 worth of monthly fees to do it before you can be competitive, then you have to take a more realistic look at the situation. With all of the vacant teams available, the ones that have a realistic shot at being competitive in the near future are going to be far more attractive than the ones that need a total overhaul and 3+ years worth of high draft picks.
