Best team is winning 110+ and then the world series.
The best team is winning 110+ games and then winning the world series. It doesn't matter how many games I win in a year, not winning the world series that year is more of a disappointment then trying to enjoy all the wins I had.
I just think for a team to be considered one of the best, you would need to cap it with a World Series victory.
If all teams were equal in the playoffs, then you would have a 1 in 8 shot to win. Thus if you owned 8 teams, and they all made the playoffs, winning 1 world series would be expected. Winning two would be a good year for all your teams.
I had 9 teams last year, 7 made the playoffs, 4 of which won World Series. One team won because I had home field advantage, and was able to pitch my top 2 starters in 6 of the 7 games. Another won because I had 2 starters that were great vs. lefties, while having two starters that were great vs righties, plus a 5th that was equal vs. both. I was then able to set up my rotation for each series for the best possible matchups.
These are just a couple of examples where your team can be set up for the playoffs. Using your complete roster is extra important in the playoffs, as is keeping guys healthy going into the playoffs. I lost a player at the end of the year last year, and it may have cost me that series, and it was a screw up on my part.
I agree luck does play a part in the playoffs, but skill may be even more important when playoff time comes around.
