Baseball Players And Their Injuries
There may be no answer to this question but I thought I would post it here with so many learned baseball minds looking in.
Why are major league player so prone to injuries? I bet if you compared them to football or hockey (two extreme contact sports), baseball would win in a landslide. How many of us spend an enormous amount of time from season-to-season repairing or shoring up a team that has been descimated by injuries? It wasn't like this in the '50's, 60's, 70's, or early 80's. Could enormous salaries be contributing?
I have heard it said by respectable baseball people that we must think of these guys the same way we think about thoroughbred (pure or pedigeee stock) horses - I often can't help thinking of the wrong end of that animal when I think of these guys. Heck, I played baseball in a semi-pro league until I was 23 and never had an injury - maybe a slight hammy.
Anyone have any ideas?
