I understand the reason for trying this, but am concerned about the potential for abuse.

I'm asking for a LOT of extra effort in the evaluation of these trades with unmanaged teams with a view towards improving the teams competitiveness, not just "freeing up" star players.

If a trade looks uneven, please don't allow a minor tweak to make it acceptable. Don't allow aging veteran "once wases" to be traded to the unmanaged teams for proven youngsters. Don't allow superstars like A-Rod & Nomar to be involved in these trades unless the unmanaged team truly has 2 superstars at the same position and can't possibly play both. If so, make sure they get a true superstar in return, not just a number of good players or players with "potential".
