If you right click on the batter during the game you will notice a stat at the end of the list called BH/BHA. The glossary describes these as bunt hit and bunt hit attempts. Playing the corners back when a good bunter (for a base hits) is batting will yield more bunt hits and a higher percentage of success. Playing the corners in will cut down on your range at third and first. Its an interesting trade off and not for "show" I assure you.
