Thumbs down
You'll have a difficult time convincing me that Vina, Rowand, Gutierrez, Gant, or the late rookie #3 will amount to much in the future. I consider each to be a longshot. So the trade comes down
Fossum / RK #2 (late) / FA #5
for
Batista / Reed / FA #3
Fossum does have some promise... but that and $0.50 will buy you a cup of coffee.
Considering:
(1) Batista is putting up good numbers this year.
(2) The Arizona rotation is leaner since Kim left and there have been injuries. So Batista has a good chance to stay in that rotation all year
(3) Remember that lefty starters can get pounded by platoons.
With these factors I think you can make a pretty good case that Batista has more value than Fossum at this time.
Reed has very nice numbers in 2002 and not shabby in 2003. So I think he is worth at least that #2 RK if not more.
PLUS The managerless team is currently only 2 games out of the wild card race. So it might be too early for them to give up.
PLUS The guidelines for managerless trades say:
These trades will only be approved if they help the managerless team valuation for the future.
Its not obvious to me that this trade helps the future valuation. The earliest it could possibly help is 2004 ... If Fossum gets his head on straight in 2004.
At best this trade might be even. Personally I think its slanted such that it hurts the managerless team and my opinion is that it doesn't meet the criteria establisehd for a managerless trade.
