SUGGESTED CHANGE TO OPS STATISTIC
PB currently uses the OPS, L(eftie)OPS and
R(ightie)OPS stats as a summary of a player's offensive capability.
Correctly calculated, this is a very useful stat to help us rank players.
However, PB calculates it by ADDING slugging and on base percentage percentages. I would prefer to see these two stats MULTIPLIED. Here's the argument, (lifted from a recent Wall St. Journal 'By the Numbers' column):
"Why do we multiply them instead of adding like some people do? Because the effect of one of those two stats on the other is what we call 'multiplistic'. For example, a single and a stolen base accumulate 2 bases and create a certain amount of run-scoring potential. A double, though, while it gives you the same 2 bases and much more scoring potential, it can also sweep the bases clear in front of the batter. Simply adding the two numbers doesn't give the full picture of the value of a player who is good at reaching base as well as hitting the ball a long way."
It seems to me that we, the owners, can make reveommendations to Mike if we think changes should be made. What do you think?
