Hill
I"m not a Cub fan and I'm definitely not a Dusty fan.
Choi and Hill were, to a point, victims of Dusty's liking for "proven veterans."
I do, however, know something about Hill. The last positive scouting report I found on him was from November, 2001, when John Sickels expected him to become a "solid" reliever. I live down the road 45 miles fromt he Cubs AAA franchise in Des Moines. Hill put together a ten-game hitting streak, but mostly was a mediocre AAA player this year.
What I didn't know until after doing some checking as a result of the stinging criticism my post drew, was that he has had a bad back all summer, so maybe he will develop as earlier thought.
I was high on Hill, too, in the past, but have pretty well given up on him. Maybe I was wrong.
But...to project him a top tier second basemen and one of the premier leadoff hitters in the league seems excessive. I don't mind being called "ignorant" by someone who's that high on this guy.
As always with prospects, I could be wrong. But Hill has nowhere near the value of Colon, Rookie picks in RT are treacherous at best, and the other guys in the deal don't help much. Dermal Brown, although only 25, has been a huge disappointment, Lidle had one outstanding and a couple of above-average years.
Besides Garth, I didn't attempt to embarrass Ralph. I didn't post the league, team, or other owner. He chose to respond.
Let's see where Hill (and Colon) are a couple of years from now--the second coming of Pokey Reese, another second basemen the Pirates so astutely traded for--unless his poor performance is the result of injury, in which case I may eat crow.
Unless Colon turns out to be a bust--always a possibility with a pitcher--I would stand by my original reaction.
