VORP
Nice to hear a different perspective on building a team. Pitching over hitting...the eternal question!
As to Webb for Berkman...I'd keep Webb. On Baseball Prospectus website they talk about "VORP." It stands for "value over replacement player."
Webb seems to be a top quality Starter...giving up less hits than IP, a high K/IP ratio, and good command (evidenced by a high K/BB ratio). He is scads above the average replacement player at starting pitcher.
Berkman, however, is a very good LF, however he is coming off a down year in 2003. His slugging avg of .515 is just above the avg. LF. His OBP of .412 it outstanding. Combined OPS of .927
is very good...but doesn't seem to be as high above replacement levels as Webb is.
I could see Berkman/FA2 for Webb/FA8...as possible. But it's close. Definitely subject to debate!
