First, I'll say I agree with you.
This is something that needs additional clarification. We can see if we can get additional clarification on this during the offseason.
Here are a couple things I do know:
Players listed as Rusty play as normal when on the road.
Short relievers try to use lefty/righty advantages, thus the best short reliever might not be used.
Closers come in for save situations.
A 3 man starting staff will get your starters pulled sooner.
Middle relievers are usually used when you are 3 runs ahead or behind.
Here are things I do to maximize my relief staff.
If I have 4 good relievers, I'll not use a closer. I put two guys at middle relief, and two guys at short relief.
If I have 5 good relievers, with one that is really good, I'll add this really good reliever as my closer.
If you want your starter to stay in a little longer, even if he's not pitching well, make sure your long relievers have a max batters faced of 6-8.
This has been a terrible year for me in the playoffs. I had 6 traditional and 3 RT teams make the playoffs(2 teams didn't make it), most lost in the 1st round this year(last year I won 3 world series)
