Infield In?

Posted By Erle

Is it just me, or does bringing the infield in make no difference whatsoever?

Here's the play by play from a game I just finished. The situation was one out with Tino Martinez on third and Joe Crede on first. The infield was in. The game was tied.

"slapped towards second
Roberts gets the big hop!
and over to first for the put out
Martinez comes across the plate
Crede goes into second"

In this situation, Roberts' play is clearly to home. The "big hop" implies that it was an easy play and that Tino Martinez should never have been able to score. Roberts didn't even go for the double play, which would be option number two.

That play cost me the second game of the World Series in 2000RT1, so I'd love to know if other managers even bother bringing the infield in. I've seen this happen many, many times at home. It seems like the opposing runners always score in this situation, but mine never do.
