Assuming this trade is finallized:

As a team captain, Jeter must realize that his defensive (as well as offensive) skills are not as good as A-Rod's. Jeter has decent range at SS but often makes throwing errors; a move to 2B might alleviate some of those errors while still allowing Jeter to utilize what really makes him a high profile player, his intangible ability to make the big play when needed. He would still be a vital part of the double play which I believe is one of his better defensive assests.

Equally important would be to allow A-Rod to remain at his comfortable position while adjusting to the NY scene. I feel that even a player as accomplished as A-Rod requires time to get the feel of NY and as few distractions as possible is the best way of making the transition as smooth as possible.

The big hole in the line up at 3B can be dealt with by merely finding an adequate defensive utility player to bat 8th or 9th in the order. With the addition of A-Rod's offense and defense this shouldn't become a major weakness of the Yankees. Or the Yankees could do what they normally do and at mid-season throw a bunch of money at the problem and see what sticks.

Either way I see this trade as beneficial to both teams. It allows Texas to have better finances while still having a premier player and lets the Yankees reload with the best player in baseball. Sorry Red Sox, you lost to the NY, again.
