It would be nice if it happens... but not holding my breath
I too would like to see Arod get some time in at SS, and it may happen on a rare occasion, but I would be surprised to see Arod get five or ten games at SS every year if he is the starting 3B.
It seems to me like there are a lot of managers that would prefer to just use their utility player all over the field and leave their regular players at just that one position. I think the general thinking is that having to play more than one defensive position is a distraction to a player and they would rather minimize the number of players that have that distraction. Hence the utility guys play all over the field but in most cases the regular guys will not.
You do see the occasional Melvin Mora type all over the field...but that is the exception to the rule. --- And of course Outfielders are used interchangeably but thats less of a difference than moving around the infield.
Specifically addressing the Yankee situation --
When Torre managed the Cardinals I used to hate his style because I didn't think he was nearly as creative as I remember Herzog being. My opinion is that Torre is very good at managing the types of "people issues" that show up in the Bronx Zoo but I'm not sure he's creative enough to be willing to push Arod over to SS every time Jeter is out of the lineup.....
.... And I'm not really sure thats a bad thing.
