Wow, your definition of a superstar differs from mine.

I cannot think of any context where Matt Clement qualifies as a superstar.

Buerhle is a good young pitcher with talent ... and plenty of future value... although its hard to call him a superstar at this point

If Tim Salmon was ever a superstar he isn't now.

John Smoltz had a very fine year as a closer last year... but I don't think his name and superstar have belonged in the same sentence since about 1998 or 1999.

Palmeiro was probably a superstar 3-5 years ago, now he's a slowly fading star.

Clemens was a superstar for a long time... and if you want to call him one now I won't fight it too hard... but clearly he is very near the end of the line and has no logical place on a rebuilding club. So in the case of Clemens the question is not "should he be traded" the question clearly is "We need to trade him. What should we get for him?"

I could probably nitpick a few more but I think I made my point.

.........

on the flip side

in the league you are complaining about the unmanaged team traded one true superstar (Pedro) and aquired at least two young stars (Renteria and Glaus) so I think that team is more attractive now.

The next little blurb is basically semantics.

Webster defines superstar as follows:

a star (as in sports or the movies) who is considered extremely talented, has great public appeal, and can usually command a high salary. one that is very prominent or is a prime attraction.

I believe that the title of "superstar" implies reputation and popularity.

I believe that Edgar Renteria is a more valuable player in a purebaseball league than Manny Ramirez or Derek Jeter when taking into consideration the relative values of players at their positions.

However I do not believe that Renteria is a superstar in the case of the definition above. I do believe that Jeter and Manny Ramirez are superstars based on the definition above.

That said... I think Renteria is the type of player that unmanaged teams should look to acquire. But I think the word SUPERSTAR is being thrown around rather carelessly.
