Baldelli/Cabrera

Posted By Matt S

Wow. I don't see it Mike.

I think that Cabrera is by far the better prospect than Baldelli. Cabrera has already shown the power -- he has bat speed on the order of a Sheffield, plus he has already shown good zone judgment.

Baldelli's numbers tailed off significantly after the break -- he hit .308/.334/.446 pre All Star and .270/.322/.378 post All Star. The lack of patience means that he will (1) not post a good enough OBP to be a good lead off hitter (right now he's essentially Tony Womack in that department) and (2) not be able to get good enough hitter's counts to materially improve his power. That .378 SLG after the break is what worries me the most.

Clearly, Cabrera would be far more valuable as a 3B than a LF, but, even so, I think his upside is Pujols/Guerrero, whereas Baldelli's upside is Ichiro. (Not a bad upside, but also not a top 10 hitter).
