Like Brian said, trading good older players(especially after a good season) for good young prospects will help rebuild a team quickly.
Identifying whether you are contending or rebuilding is very important. Finishing at .500 doesn't win you everything. If you can contend, pick up a couple guys that can help you this year; if you can't, trade a couple aging guys that can help other teams.
