STEROID USE in MLB

Posted By Patrick

Once again, MLB is red-faced and embarrassed with BALCO and steriod use throughout baseball. The non-existence of any effective drug-testing policy at this point is inexcusable. Over the past few years I have been dismayed when Barry Bonds wins yet another NL MVP award when he is, at best, foolish and stupid with his association with one of his "best friends," personal trainer Greg Anderson. In my opinion, its an easy conclusion that he used performance-enhancing drugs/steriods from 2001-2003. He claims innocence and ignorance but that does not change the fact that he used them, unknowingly or not. Jason Giambi, and the others that we'll find out about later, fall into the same category. At a minimum, MLB needs to fine and discipline these players and set an example. Follow that with adoption of the drug-testing policy currently used in the Minors and maybe even toughen it up a bit. This is not a gray area...this is a form of cheating and all of us have been turning a blind eye for much too long. Take a look at Bonds SLG from 1997-2000 compared to 2001-2004:

1997-2000 SLG averaged = .625
2001-2004 SLG averaged = .805

All of a sudden, after 15 years as a ML player, he starts whacking the ball harder...come on, anybody can connect these dots. Its time to put a big asterick next to his stats and awards for the past few years. Maybe its even time for PB to start thinking about how Barry Bonds and his stats affects this simulation game!
